NEWS: FLORIDA, A TAX VICTORY OR A SOCIAL TIME BOMB?

Date:

The new wave of ultra-wealthy migrants flooding into Florida makes it the winner in terms of migration and financial inflows among U.S. states competing to attract as much wealth as possible (see Flore Kayl’s article: https://lesoleildelafloride.com/actualites/ billionaires-continue-to-flock-to-the-sunshine-state). Whether it’s Jeff Bezos, Larry Page (co-founder of Google), or others, this is a massive migration of a new kind that is accelerating dramatically under the tropical sun so beloved by retirees.

The impact on the middle and working classes, however, is severe: 50% of Florida’s permanent residents have already considered leaving the state due to the cost of living. At the same time, the Tampa metropolitan area has become the urban area with the highest number of foreclosures in the country. The American Dream is faltering for many (see the previous article: https://lesoleildelafloride.com/chroniques/le-reve-americain-vacille-en-floride/).

Nearly one-third of the world’s 3,000 billionaires live in the United States. At the top of the wealth ladder, growth is meteoric. The wealth of the ultra-rich has increased by 40% in just two years. Half of all U.S. stocks (productive value) are held by just 1% of Americans (see Federal Reserve data). It is against this backdrop of growing inequality that Florida appears to be on track to succeed in its goal of becoming the premier destination for settling down and shielding one’s billions of dollars from taxation.

Success or failure?

Attracting an excessive concentration of wealth among a small number of individuals by offering zero taxation is a model that has its limitations. The first problem is economic: the flow of money through the real economy slows down. The ultra-rich invest their fortunes in foreign financial markets, unlike middle-income households, which spend nearly all of their income on goods and services domestically. Redistributing wealth therefore stimulates the real economy, since it is by spreading purchasing power that consumption increases, small and medium-sized businesses thrive, and employment improves. A middle class strengthened by a more equitable distribution of wealth is the most effective driver of long-term economic growth.

Furthermore, real estate speculation is supplanting sustainable productive investment. The rise in prices driven by the influx of wealthy residents tends to displace middle-income households, causing profound structural negative effects on the economy as a whole.

In addition to these strictly economic aspects, there are social issues to consider. Growing inequality undermines democracy by granting wealth disproportionate influence over politics.

This new wave of migration is undermining the quality of life for the majority of Floridians, who cannot participate in such a speculative environment. Contrary to appearances, the Sunshine State finds itself at the center of uncertainty: is it on the path to unprecedented success or to a failure with lasting consequences?
