NEWS IN BRIEF

GAS PRICES SOAR

The average price of regular gas in Florida is $3.95 per gallon as of March 30, 2026, which is slightly below the national average ($3.99), but obviously a sharp increase from last month when regular gas was $2.90—a staggering 36% jump in one month—due to the war launched by the United States and Israel against Iran.

As of March 30, Palm Beach County recorded a regular gas price of $4.12 per gallon, compared to $3.07 in February 2026. In Fort Lauderdale, the price rose to $4.01 from $2.93 last month. The same trend was seen in Naples ($4.02 vs. $2.96) and Miami ($3.94 vs. $2.90).

The entire world is affected by these increases, and in the United States, the national average rose from $2.98 at the end of February 2026 to $3.99 per gallon on March 30, a 34% increase.

According to the New York Times, gas prices in the U.S. are expected to remain high for several months, or even the entire year, as the conflict disrupts oil shipments passing through the Strait of Hormuz. Experts say that even if the war were to end immediately, it would take six to eight weeks for energy production and transportation to return to normal, with prices likely to stabilize at higher levels.

This energy crisis is likely to push the undecided to switch to electric vehicles.

NO TO THE CRUISE PORT NEAR SARASOTA

The bill, passed by the House of Representatives, has just been signed into law by the governor of Florida, and environmental advocates can breathe a sigh of relief: the construction of a new cruise port in Manatee County, just north of Sarasota and south of St. Petersburg, has not been authorized by Florida lawmakers.

DeSantis stated: “Florida remains a major destination for cruise travel. There is really no need to add another port in the middle of a protected area and an aquatic preserve.” Indeed, this would have had a direct impact on the Terra Ceia Aquatic Preserve, along Tampa Bay, which is home to sensitive marine habitats.

However, the government is committed to accelerating the reconstruction of Tampa Bay’s Sunshine Skyway Fishing Pier, on the Manatee County side, which was damaged by hurricanes, so that everyone can once again enjoy this beautiful attraction.

ICE STILL NOT DEPLOYED AT FLORIDA AIRPORTS

Airports in Southeast Florida have not been notified by the DHS (Department of Homeland Security) that they would receive support from ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement). On the state’s southwest coast, Fort Myers International Airport (RSW) has received it.

Despite sometimes long lines at passenger screening at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL), and accumulated delays by many airlines at airports in Southeast Florida, ICE has not yet been deployed to assist TSA (Transportation Security Administration) agents in the region. At FLL, officers from the Broward Sheriff’s Office were seen patrolling along the passenger lines.

CRYPTOCURRENCY COMPANY AND PONZI SCHEME

The cryptocurrency company Goliath Ventures, based in Central Florida, filed for bankruptcy in March 2026, following the arrest of its president and founder, 34-year-old Christopher Delgado, last February.

Prosecutors allege that the company defrauded nearly 1,500 victims, including Canadians, out of $328 million, in addition to charges of money laundering and wire fraud.
