Florida occupies a central place in the US aviation landscape, and the growing tension within the country does not seem to be deterring travelers. Florida’s airports are operating at full capacity, with two of them ranking among the top 10 busiest airports on the continent.
Orlando International Airport (MCO) ranks seventh among the busiest airports in North America, while Miami International Airport ranks tenth.
However, no airport in the Sunshine State has managed to take the place of the world’s busiest airport: Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. It is primarily optimized for domestic flights, which explains why it is not well known globally despite handling more than 108 million passengers in 2024. It plays a major role in the United States’ domestic air network. The economic impact is estimated at $66 billion.
Orlando
Florida generates significant air traffic with millions of tourists coming to enjoy its beaches, theme parks, cruises, and other attractions.
Orlando is a preferred gateway for visitors. Its airport benefits from the popularity of Walt Disney World and the county’s entire tourist complex. Its air traffic of 57 million passengers in 2025 is mainly domestic. The airport has 170 restaurants and an on-site hotel. The economic impact it generates is estimated at $41 billion. Nearly 310,000 direct and indirect jobs depend on it.
Miami
Miami International Airport (MIA) stands out as one of the leading US hubs for international air freight (three million tons of cargo in 2024), making it an essential logistics center for imports and exports. This activity gives it an importance that goes beyond tourism. Its traffic is estimated at 56 million passengers in 2025. In Miami-Dade County alone, it supports more than 300,000 jobs and generates $41.2 billion. MIA is a powerful economic engine for the state.
Fort Lauderdale
Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) is also a major economic engine for South Florida. It supports more than 200,000 direct and indirect jobs and generates approximately $37.5 billion in economic impact each year. It welcomed 35.7 million passengers in 2024 and ranks 17th among the busiest airports in the United States.
Investments
Significant investments are planned in the development plans for all of these airports in the Sunshine State to accommodate the increase in air traffic, cargo, and passengers. Approximately $9 billion is earmarked for facility upgrades at Miami Airport. Another $6 billion 10-year expansion plan is in the works in Orlando, and Fort Lauderdale is not to be outdone with development plans for a new passenger terminal, new terminal connections, eight new parking levels, and more.
