In general terms, artificial intelligence (AI) refers not only to the set of programs or algorithms that enable machines to perform tasks typically associated with human intelligence, but also to the field of research aimed at developing such machines and the resulting computer systems.
The use of artificial intelligence can therefore have significant effects in areas such as learning, reasoning, problem-solving, perception, and decision-making.
Florida is positioning itself as a leader
Transforming learning and teaching in academic courses by integrating AI is a long-planned change and part of the University of Florida’s (UF) “AI Across the Curriculum” philosophy. Thanks to a $70 million partnership with NVIDIA Corporation (a multinational technology company), linked to the state-of-the-art HiPerGator supercomputer, has positioned itself as “the nation’s first AI university” and aims to ensure that every undergraduate student develops skills in using AI.

The partnership between the College of Dentistry (UFCD) and Overjet illustrates how AI can be applied in clinical settings. Here is an example: using technology approved by the Food and Drug Administration, cavities and caries are detected in teeth and assessed using X-rays, and the X-rays are color-coded.
This allows dental students to move beyond pattern recognition to focus on reasoning and formulating a diagnosis, then planning treatment, and finally communicating with patients. Thanks to clinical research initiatives like this one, it is easy to see how AI’s ability to simplify very difficult tasks can lead to more effective dental education.

Over the past two decades, AI has entered every aspect of daily life at an unchecked pace. From virtual assistants in electronic devices to decision-support systems used by business leaders, AI is now an indispensable, behind-the-scenes problem-solver.
It is a tool that facilitates many tasks without requiring us to think about them. This could well be the cause of a troubling phenomenon of our time, known as “cognitive offloading.”
This phenomenon disrupts the ability to think critically—that is, the skills and attitudes required for rigorous reasoning to achieve a goal or analyze facts to form a judgment.
