BUSINESS : PASSENGER NUMBERS ON THE RISE FOR BRIGHTLINE

Date:

Finally, some good news for the private railway company, which has recently struggled financially and with its reputation, with the high-speed train earning the nickname “Killer Train”: more and more passengers are using Brightline as average fares fall in South Florida!

According to a report by WLRN, the number of passengers on Brightline, which connects the southeast of the state to Orlando, increased last October. Travelers in South Florida have benefited from lower average fares and virtually unchanged costs for longer trips compared to last year. As a result, Brightline saw its total revenue increase by 16% in October compared to the previous month. Since the beginning of 2025, the company’s total revenue has increased by 13%.

In terms of overall growth, Brightline transported nearly 800,000 passengers in the first quarter of 2025, with most of this increase due to long-distance travel between Miami and Orlando. Brightline also benefited from sustained demand, as by the end of November 2025, the company reported 1.5 million long-distance passengers. While long-distance ridership jumped (+26% year-over-year), short-distance ridership in the southeastern part of the state (Miami-Aventura-Fort Lauderdale-Boca Raton-West Palm Beach) stagnated, although Brightline’s semi-annual reports showed a slight recovery (+7%) last June.

More details

In December 2024, Brightline received five additional cars from Siemens, and in early January 2025, these cars were put into service. At that time, the Federal Railroad Administration awarded Brightline a $33.8 million grant under the Restoration and Enhancement Grant program to offset some of the operating costs associated with expanding its service. The February 2025 report shows a record 162,500 long-distance trips in January, up 32% from the previous year. Average revenue per passenger was $63.42, up 10% from 2024. In April, in the first quarter of 2025, the report indicates 793,432 passengers, up 10% compared to the first quarter of 2024. Long-distance ridership (Miami-Orlando) reached 468,283 passengers, up 26% compared to the previous year. Brightline recorded a 7% increase in train ridership in the southeastern part of the state in June 2025 (84,000 passengers), the first growth in two years! The August report also confirms strong train ridership between Miami and Orlando and sustained growth in passenger numbers. The results of the latest report reconfirm this increase in October 2025.

Hope

In short, despite the difficulties encountered on its short routes in Southeast Florida, Brightline enjoyed a pivotal year in 2025 thanks to increased ridership on its flagship Miami-Orlando corridor.
