SIGNIFICANT RENOVATION UNDERWAY

Date:

DEERFIELD BEACH IS UNDERGOING A TRANSFORMATION AND IS EAGER TO WELCOME YOU!

In Southeast Florida, the city of Deerfield Beach is renowned for its beautiful beach, diverse water sports, green spaces, welcoming atmosphere, and iconic fishing pier.

However, Tropical Storm Nicole, which became a hurricane in 2022, caused significant damage to the internationally renowned pier. « That storm caused damage that was visible above the water, but it was the damage below the surface that needed serious repairs, » Rebecca Medina Stewart, Director of Public Affairs and Marketing for the city of Deerfield Beach, told Le Soleil de la Floride in an email. As a result, the Deerfield City Council has committed to modernizing its infrastructure to prepare the city for the decades ahead, taking advantage of the opportunity to make much-needed improvements and renovations to the pier and its surroundings.

Projects that have been completed to date in the beach area

Several enhancements have been implemented at the pier, including the installation of a display board, artistic signage, an IPE wood trash enclosure, trash can lids with pier regulations, and information signs.

Improvements have also been made to the main beach parking lot, which now features amphitheater seating and public art railings. The illuminated pedestrian and turtle bollards along Ocean Way have also been replaced. The new design features turtle-friendly lighting housed in a modern concrete shell. In addition to these enhancements, the city has also installed wheelchair-accessible sidewalks, landscaped the area, and installed new bus shelters.

The Kirk Cottrell Pavilion, constructed approximately eighteen months ago, boasts an information kiosk and benches along the perimeter, offering comfortable seating and views of the ocean, as well as volleyball and footvolley courts. Other notable additions include a mural by Guy Harvey, a pier porthole offering a view from an underwater camera, and illuminated pedestrian walkways.

Ongoing projects and new occupants

A new building is currently under construction in Sullivan Park, located at the northwestern tip of the Intracoastal Waterway and Hillsboro Boulevard. The Museum of Discovery and Science, located in Fort Lauderdale, will offer several programs in this location. The Sawgrass to Seagrass Center will include a museum dedicated to marine and oceanographic education, as well as a community space.

Among the projects underway near the beach, Medina Stewart notes that businesses are benefiting from a grant program to improve building facades. Regarding enhancements to the underground infrastructure and urban design of the S-curve on A1A leading to the pier, these improvements are nearing completion. A new candy store called Sugar Verse Candy Shop and Ice Cream Bar will open in the near future, as well as Lucky Lou’s Raw Bar, which is scheduled to open at the site of the former Bru’s Room in late summer.

Medina Stewart has announced plans for a transformation of the pier’s souvenir and bait shop, aiming to align its aesthetic with the pier’s recently renovated look. The former Deerfield Beach Cafe, located on the pier, is also undergoing renovations. The owner of Oceans 234 will be opening a new restaurant there called Break House Kitchen & Bar. This new establishment aims to offer a refreshed dining experience while maintaining the welcoming atmosphere that residents and visitors have come to appreciate. The owner has indicated that the renovations are expected to be completed in the fall, which is when the city plans to complete the renovation and repair of the pier, just in time for the Ocean Way Holiday event! The annual holiday celebration is scheduled to take place on Saturday, December 6. For more information, please visit www.deerfield-beach.com.

Snowbirds, get ready!

Medina Stewart adds for Le Soleil de la Floride: « These improvements to the beach have been part of a long-standing vision for our community. The Deerfield Beach Community Redevelopment Agency has worked diligently over the years to enhance the beach area and make it an inviting, family-friendly destination for both residents and visitors.” She continues: “We are especially proud to welcome back our Canadian family who calls Deerfield Beach their home away from home during part of the year. We’re excited for them to experience the completed enhancements firsthand. It’s important to us that the beach remains a warm, welcoming, and vibrant destination for our Canadian friends and all of our seasonal guests from the north.”
