POLITICO: IS TRUMP LOSING SUPPORT AMONG LATINO VOTERS?

Date:

A national poll of Latino voters, conducted by the Latino Public Opinion Forum (LPOF) at Florida International University (FIU), reveals that Trump has lost his historic support among them, except in Florida.

In 2024, while Trump won 46% of the Latino vote—the highest share ever obtained by a Republican presidential candidate—this new poll suggests he has lost that advantage outside of Florida.

The national poll shows that more than two-thirds of Latino voters now disapprove of Trump and believe the country is on the wrong track, and 60% said they would vote Democratic in the midterm elections this coming November.

For Eduardo Gamarra, a political science professor at FIU and director of the LPOF, “This is a very significant shift,” he told WLRN. “On core issues, particularly the cost of living and immigration policies, Latinos seem to be returning to the Democratic Party.”

Among independent Latino voters, only 29% approve of Trump’s performance.

Mr. Gamarra adds: “They determined the outcome among Latinos in 2024 and will likely do so again in November.” According to him, purchasing power is the main concern driving them away from Trump and his party today, followed by immigration policy and healthcare costs.

Immigration: 52% of Hispanics oppose Trump’s deportation program, but 66% disapprove of the controversial detention and deportation methods implemented by ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement). Additionally, nearly 90% of Latinos surveyed want a pathway to U.S. citizenship for undocumented immigrants who are in good standing.

Foreign policy: 58% disapprove of Trump’s “Dornau doctrine” in the Western Hemisphere and his more militarized security agenda in Latin America.

Florida differs from other states

In Florida, 81% of Latinos who identify as Republicans continue to support Trump. Cubans, in particular, are the exception in the poll. Gamarra states: “53% of Cubans support Trump, making them the group with the strongest support for Trump in the country, among the entire electorate.”

On the issue of immigration, more than 70% of Cubans said they support Trump’s deportation campaign, and 55% of Latinos in Florida also support it.

Cubans, however, are a notable exception in the Sunshine State, as Trump’s highest disapproval rating comes from the largest Latino communities (Mexicans and Puerto Ricans).

On average, for the 2026 midterm elections, Latino voters in Florida are split: 39% of them support Democrats for the U.S. House of Representatives, and 38% support Republicans.

UnidosUS

The latest national bipartisan poll conducted by UnidosUS also reveals growing concern among Hispanic voters regarding economic stability, civil rights, and the lack of congressional oversight.

While 81% of Latino voters are concerned about the lack of congressional oversight, 59% believe their civil rights and freedoms are less secure.

If the midterm elections were held today, 52% of Latino voters would vote for the Democratic candidate for the House of Representatives, and 28% for the Republican. Among registered Hispanic voters, 75% of those surveyed say they are certain or likely to vote in 2026.

Top concerns among Latino voters:

53% are concerned about the cost of living (food and basic expenses);

36% are concerned about jobs and the economy (high prices, low wages);

32% are concerned about housing (rising rents, electricity bills, utilities, taxes, and home insurance, as well as a lack of affordable housing).
