HURRICANE PREPARATION

Date:

The official Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, with a peak around September 10 and a period of intense activity from mid-August to mid-October.

It’s important not to wait until the last minute to put together a kit filled with essential tools and supplies: flashlights, batteries, a radio, a first aid kit, and non-perishable food (such as canned goods or snacks) should be top priorities. Don’t forget pet food as well. The goal is to be able to get by for a few days without electricity or cooking facilities.

Authorities also recommend storing plenty of drinking water, along with toilet paper, duct tape (for quick repairs), a fire extinguisher, scissors, matches, and trash bags.

You should also fill your vehicle’s gas tank and include cash in your emergency kit, a copy of your insurance policy, dry clothes, a list of important phone numbers, and a map of your local area.

It’s vital to follow evacuation orders and properly secure your home before leaving: bring in outdoor furniture and any objects that could turn into projectiles. It’s not necessary to drain swimming pools, but make sure to check satellite dishes, secure or remove any outdoor canvas or tarps, and inspect gutter attachments. Potted plants should be brought indoors.

While taping windows is unnecessary, authorities recommend leaving the doors of Florida rooms or patios open to allow wind to circulate.

Tropical storms are officially classified as hurricanes (and given a name) only when wind speeds reach 74 mph (119 km/h). As of July 22, 2025, no hurricane has been officially declared this season.
