EDITORIAL: ARTISTS WITHOUT BORDERS

Date:

We are currently living in an era where our borders are being tested and shaken, even threatened, whether they be physical, cultural, or ideological. But there are artists for whom no borders exist.

This is the case for Canadian jazz pianist and singer Laila Biali, who also holds American citizenship. She recently gave a concert in Miami, described as an intimate musical experience blending jazz, pop, and world music. While critics highlight her exceptional talent, the dual citizen, married to American drummer Ben Wittman, says she is inspired by Canadian artists whose reach extends beyond borders. She sees her American tour as a symbol of this dual identity.

The boundaries of music also continue to be explored and conquered by Diana Krall, the Canadian jazz pianist and singer known internationally for her contralto voice. Not only has she sold over 15 million albums worldwide, including more than six million in the United States, but her work has also built bridges between different musical styles and cultures, including collaborations with her British husband, Elvis Costello, and songs by Canadian icon Joni Mitchell.

Diana Krall will be performing on January 25 and 26 in Miami and West Palm Beach.

Figuratively speaking, there are also boundaries that burst, as in the expression “burst out laughing.” That’s what we invite you to do from February 25 to March 8 at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts in West Palm Beach. This is another example of Canadian artistic influence in Florida, with the comedy play Kim’s Convenience, produced by a Montrealer!

“Mr. Kim, a first-generation Korean immigrant, dispenses fatherly wisdom, history lessons and potato chips from behind his convenience store counter in the up-and-coming Regent Park neighborhood of Toronto. Wholly original, hysterically funny and deeply moving, KIM’S CONVENIENCE tells the story of one Korean family struggling to face the future amidst the bitter memories of their past. But no matter what, humor and heart find their way onto every aisle in this award-winning play that is now a hit series on Netflix. «

The conflict between traditional parents and their modern Canadian-born children explores universal generational gaps, duty, and implicit love. A Canadian cultural event not to be missed on the Florida scene, as The Toronto Star gives Kim’s Convenience a 4/4 rating!

In short, we are fortunate to have artists without borders, whose talent and creativity invite us to push our limits while respecting each other’s boundaries, allowing ourselves to be inspired, influenced, and integrated in the right way.
